Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Microplane Coarse GraterCustomer Review: NOT up to par Summary: 3 StarsYes, this is still an improvement over box graters. However, it is not fabulous.
CONS:
1. Flimsy plastic construction. Hasn't broken yet, but it will.
2. When grating hard cheese the blade tries to separate from the handle unless you put your index finger in the small hole on the plastic portion of the handle just above the handgrip.
I would pass on this product and opt instead of all metal construction. I prefer both the Micro plane professional graters and the Cuisipro line.
Customer Review: Go to for quick jobs Summary: 5 StarsI use this for grating brick cheese whenever I need a relatively small amount -- like cheese as a garnish, not cheese as an ingredient. For big jobs, I head for the food processor. Sometimes in a moment of insanity, I whip out a box grater. I think this is a lot safer than a box grater, but maybe not as fast.
I love it because it doesn't take up a lot of space and I've been able to successfully clean it in the dishwasher.
Customer Review: Great Technology, But Don't Buy This One!! Summary: 4 StarsThis is the first of two Microplane graters that I purchased, but this choice received a lower 4* ranking. While this grater is from the standard line, the other is from the professional line. With many kitchen items the term 'professional' is just a hollow designation, but in this case it definitely matters!
All Microplane graters use the same basic technology for cutting -- technology which was originally developed for the woodworking industry but that has been adapted for exceptional service in the kitchen as well. Many others in this group have extolled the Microplane virtues, so I'll concentrate on helping you choose the best one . . . the professional!
Now, what makes the professional so much better? Well, the standard line has 3 major/minor flaws: 1) the easy-grip rubber handle tends to capture water when washed, 2) the plastic molded frame holding the grating surface cracks when washed in the dishwasher, & 3) the head is so incredibly sharp that it must be kept covered, yet there is no easy way to do this except for the original tagboard cover.
The professional version fixes all of these issues. The frame and hollow handle (no water capture points) are stainless steel which eliminates issues #1 & #2 and it also comes with a nice snap-on plastic cover to protect the sharp head surface which takes care of issue #3. I can find _no_ faults with this version.
End result: For an extra $5, BUY THE PROFESSIONAL MICROPLANE!!
Customer Review: Well built - Effortless Summary: 5 StarsI also bought the fine grater from this company. Both are great tools. They will grate mounds of cheese in no time and with no hand fatigue. I have little strenght in my hands, and I was a bit worried about getting a hand grater, rather than an electric. But this greaters are super sharp and do a great job with no effort. The attachment is recommended. For smaller pieces of cheese (or chocolate...) it will save your fingers. With so many poorly designed tools out there, it is a real pleasure to use one as well made as this! Highly recommended
Customer Review: The Gr8est! Summary: 5 StarsIt's great. Nothing else to say. Get one if you ever grate cheese.
