I own other cheese graters - the rotary one and a box grater and this is far superior for grating hard cheeses. It is so quick to grate cheese over a plate or in quantity for a recipe. I can grate a cup of parmesan in under two minutes. I started buying pre-shredded cheese before purchasing this item because of the hassle of setting and cleaning up my other graters. The Microplane grater makes the task easy and enjoyable and of course fresh cheese has the best flavor. It is almost flat so it stores easily in the utensil drawer and the holes in the grater seem to not hold any cheese residue so cleanup is a snap requiring a good rinsing and quick wash. Highly recommend as it is so functional at such a small price.Customer Review: One kitched gadget that you NEED!

Ok, we all have scads of kitchen gadgets, most collect dust... But this one(and the other Mircroplane graters) will pleasantly surprise you! I use it all the time - it does a wonderful job grating cheese, chocolate... you name it. Unlike many cumbersome graters it's easy to use and you won't make a big mess with stuff flying all over your counter. It also washed like a dream in the dishwasher. This also makes a great gift!Customer Review: almost lost my thumbnail or I would've given it 5 stars!

well yes this is definitely a sharp grater...I found that out when I was grating a small chunk of cheddar last week with my new microplane (a small not tiny piece of cheese mind you) and it slipped and before my 4 year old could say "Oooh! Mommy you have a bleed!" a chunk of my thumbnail and finger were missing.
BE CAREFUL with this tool, it is definitely razor sharp. DO NOT let your kids use it. If the ingredient is slippery beware. I saw a little box gizmo at the store that attaches onto the grater and you can put the food inside and slide it. I think I will go look for that.
Otherwise it made some nice fluffy cheese for our omellette.
Ouch.

This grater is definitely the best I've owned. Like everyone else, I spent years using both the clunky tripod style grater and older single plane graters. As other reviewers have noted, the tripod model frequently leads to injury and is difficult to clean. The older single plane graters are okay, but you end up having to move what you're grating and not the grater. As a result, I would sometimes "break" hard cheeses in half by applying too much strength.
In contrast, the Microplane grater is easy to use, extremely easy to clean, and produces great results. With very little strength, you can grate by moving the grater - and not what you're grating. This produces less mess and eliminates the chance that things like cheese will break in half.
Finally, the results are very nice. Grating parmesean produces very light, elegant shavings of cheese, making your dishes look great.
